Starting out (with a clean butt)

Hi everyone!  I'm happy to be starting my own mama blog.  I'm going to put tutorials of things I've created or made (of my own invention or that I've modified from another recipe or tutorial).

First off - Home Made Baby Wipes that automatically pop up through the lid

Supplies:
  • Paper Towels (I use Viva, it is soft and strong, but i haven't tried any other brands)
  • Knife (I use my electric turkey carving knife, super easy, but any kitchen knife will work, it just turns into an arm workout )
  • Container (I use a Bonnie Doon's 58oz ice cream bucket and a 16oz  Cool Whip container)
  • Pen or Marker
  • 1 1/2 Tablespoons Baby Wash
  • 1 Tablespoon Baby Oil
  • Exacto knife (just for your first batch)

Lets get Started.

To mark where to cut your paper towel roll in half, place the roll into the container and put a dot on the top where the edge of the container is.

Use your knife (or turkey carver) to slice the roll in half on that dot.  If you use a standard kitchen knife, be patient, you don't want to just shove the knife down, you'll squish the roll and then its more of a pain to put in the container because you have to re-shape it.  Just be patient and saw back and forth.  If you use the electric knife still go slow, and if you slowly roll the paper towel roll around on the counter as you're cutting it, the knife doesn't struggle so much through the thick middle part.

Mark the other end of the roll at the same height as the first section you cut off (so you can use it for your next batch of wipes)  I recommend waiting to cut that other segment until after you complete the rest of this batch so that your arms don't get so worn out (if you're using a regular knife) or so the electric knife has a chance to cool down (it'll overheat if you do both cuts one right after the other)

If you want to, you can make a dot on the edge of the roll like I did below.  It helps to serve as a visual marker for when its about time to make new wipes

Into 1 and 3/4 cups water add 1 tablespoon of Baby oil (I recommend doing the oil before the soap, because then the oil coats the spoon and you get more of the soap out of the spoon without having to use a spatula)

Then add 1 1/2 tablespoons of Baby wash (whatever scent you like or you could do unscented if you have a baby with sensitive skin) and gently stir to combine everything.

Put your paper towels into the container and pour your liquid mixture in.

If you are making wipes for the first time and want to have a pop-up container, take your exacto knife and cut an X into the top of the lid.

Put the lid on your container and walk away for at least 2 or 3 hours.  It takes at least that long for the liquid to soak all the way through the wipes.  If you need your wipes right away you can add more water (but i wouldn't recommend it, your whole batch will get super saturated to the point where you will have to squeeze the extra liquid out of each wipe as you use it (which makes the soap bubble, not something you want to find out when trying to clean off a squirmy baby and wondering what that white stuff is)).

Once all the liquid is absorbed all the way up to the top of the roll, grab the cardboard center and gently pull it out (if you twist it towards the center of the roll it unglues from itself and comes out very easily)

Pull the inner most paper towel up and push it through the bottom of the X on the lid.  Put your lid on your container and ...

TA-DA! Home made baby wipes in a pop-up container.

Isn't that cool?
